Many of the churches, dating from the 15th century to the present time, contain plentiful examples of the skill and beauty of the wood and stone carvers art, treasured church plate and a wide variety of wonderful tablets inscribed with the epitaphs of past members of their congregation. |

Historic Houses |

There are great 16th century houses built by the gentry to show off their status, beautiful farmhouses owned by the yeomen and small hand loom weavers cottages where those less fortunate eked out their living. There are also row upon row of 19th century terraced houses that were home to those who worked long hours in the cotton mills. |
